One of Gavin Foundation's longest running and most impactful community programs is the Alcoholics Anonymous Way of Life (AAWOL) Program. Established in 1969 when members of the Alcoholics Anonymous community began facilitating groups at Gavin House in South Boston, AAWOL has become a nationally recognized recovery support model. Over the past 57 years, the program has expanded beyond South Boston and Massachusetts, with AAWOL programs established throughout the United States and internationally in England, Poland, Ireland, and China.

The Alcoholics Anonymous Way of Life (AAWOL) Program is a structured 21-week recovery support program designed for individuals seeking to strengthen and maintain their recovery from substance use disorders. The program utilizes the Alcoholics Anonymous text, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions, as the foundation for reading, discussion, personal reflection, and peer support.

The primary objective of AAWOL is to provide participants with practical recovery tools, peer support, accountability, and a deeper understanding of the Twelve Step philosophy to help them achieve and sustain long-term recovery. Through participation in the program, individuals develop healthier lifestyles, improve personal relationships, strengthen community connections, and reduce the likelihood of relapse.

Program Activities

AAWOL operates continuously throughout the year, maintaining five active groups with new groups beginning every five to six weeks. Each group includes approximately 20 to 25 participants.

Program activities include:

  • Weekly facilitated group meetings.
  • Structured reading and discussion of Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions.
  • Workbook exercises and guided reflection activities.
  • Peer support and accountability.
  • Recovery-focused discussion and problem-solving.
  • Connection to additional recovery resources and services.
  • Referrals to treatment or higher levels of care when appropriate.

For more than 57 years, AAWOL has provided free recovery support services to individuals seeking long-term recovery from substance use disorders.
