JOB TITLE: Development Specialist
REPORTS TO: President/CEO
SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Director of Development is responsible for directing and leading the fundraising efforts for a non-profit organization that wants to grow to higher levels of service. She/he is also responsible for developing and implementing a strategic fundraising program to include major gifts, special events and annual giving.
The Gavin Foundation was established in 1962 in South Boston. The Foundation has offered counseling, recovery and prevention services to at-risk and high-risk individuals and their families to prevent substance abuse related behaviors. The staff of the organization has been changing teenagers, young adults, and family’s lives while assisting the community through partnerships in education and prevention. The Director of Development must possess character qualities consistent with the organization’s core values.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Lead, develop and implement strategies for the development committee, while maintaining goals to meet the organization’s priorities.
· With guidance from the president and the development committee, he/she will create a strategic fundraising plan with clear, measurable objectives. This plan will be broken into annual goals which will be monitored and reported on monthly.
· Build strong donor and volunteer constituencies in the community
· Manages all strategies and activities for donor cultivation, solicitation, and relations.
· Lead in the support and administration of special events.
· Create and identify opportunities for the community to learn about our organization, services, and results.
· Build and maintain the donor database.
· Identify and plan donor recognition opportunities.
· Provide activity reports to the president on an established or request basis reflecting personal activities, plans and goals.
· Conduct the full range of activities required to prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation and government sources.
· Perform research on foundations and government agencies to evaluate prospects for grants.
· Comply with all grant reporting as required by foundation/government donors.
LICENSURE:
· Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) certification preferred but not required
REQIREMENTS:
· Bachelor’s degree is required.
· A minimum of 3 years of experience in fund development, sales, marketing or related field, preferably in the not for profit industry. Experience in all basic areas of fund raising.
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
· Computer literacy which includes multiple software programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point, and knowledge of basic design software.
DESIRED SKILLS:
· Experience with a donor database a plus
· Strong organizational skills, very detail oriented and ability to successfully handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
· Requires stationary tasks at desk/computer in combination with frequent walking or driving.
· Requires excellent communications skills both verbal and written.
· Must be willing to work occasional nights and weekend.
· Requires frequent travel to various locations and events.
· Some lifting/moving of materials is incumbent in the job.
· Requires ability to deal with all levels in the organization, may deal with difficult situations/people occasionally.
